Chaos broke out in Harvard Square on Sunday night when a runaway driver hit a street sign, shattering a beloved grocery store's front window. Wholesome Fresh, located at the intersection of Church and Brattle Streets, is now dealing with the aftermath of a hit-and-run that peppered the area with debris—along with a hefty repair bill.

The CPD reported that the vehicle, which remains at large, "struck a street sign" directly in front of the grocery store before making a break for it. "The sign broke away from its base and went into the window of the business, shattering the glass," CPD spokesperson Robert Goulston wrote in an email, details of which were reported by The Crimson. An unlucky pedestrian caught in the street-side storm was hit by the flying fragments, treated on the scene, but declined further medical attention.

Wholesome Fresh employee Rigo Pérez gave a firsthand account of the scene he walked into Monday morning, describing the store’s condition to The Crimson. "It was pretty bad," he said. "Even in the morning, when I showed up to work, it was like pieces of glass everywhere."

The store has been a staple in the community since opening its doors in 2018 and refused to let this incident disrupt their service, continuing to operate normally on Monday. While an inconvenience, the damage seems to be a minor setback, with Pérez noting that the window will be fixed by Tuesday. Meanwhile, local authorities are on the hunt for the the driver responsible for the havoc.
