From 9 PM to 3 AM, motorists should be prepared for potential delays as the San Jose Police Department conducts these sobriety tests at a location they have yet to disclose.

According to a news release by the San Jose Police Department, the checkpoint is part of a strategy based on data about areas with higher frequencies of impaired driving accidents. "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," stated Lieutenant Nqui Scherry #3822. These preventive measures are aimed at improving public safety by reducing the likelihood of accidents due to impaired driving. The selection of the checkpoint location reflects this data-driven approach to enforcement.

The Police Department also took the opportunity to remind the public that not only alcohol, but drugs – including prescription medicine, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana, even if legal for medicinal or recreational usages – can impair driving abilities. Motorists caught driving under the influence can expect hefty fines averaging $13,500, suspension of their driving license, and the potential for even more severe legal consequences.

Funding for the DUI checkpoint initiative is backed by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, channelled through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This financial support is crucial in maintaining the efforts to safeguard the roads from impaired drivers, and by extension, protect the lives of all road users in San Jose.
