A 43-year-old man was nabbed by Springfield cops in connection with a string of break-ins and thefts, authorities said Wednesday. Felix Vazquez was collared on April 2 in broad daylight, after Springfield Police Officers and a Detective spotted him holed up near Saratoga Street and Dwight Street Extension. The perp, tied to a series of thefts spanning from construction sites to the iconic Basketball Hall of Fame, was finally put in cuffs after being on the police radar for some time.
Springfield's finest were hot on Vazquez's trail, previously securing three arrest warrants for the suspect. In a stroke of luck or, perhaps tenacity, a Detective saw Vazquez lingering on Dwight Street Extension and swiftly moved in for the arrest. The suspect was caught red-handed with a toolkit for crime – including bolt cutters, pliers, masks, and a file. According to Springfield Police Department's official statement, the weight of evidence found on his person signaled a clear intent to plunder.
And the rap sheet doesn't stop there. After slapping the cuffs on Vazquez, Detectives raided his Central Street residence under the green light from Captain Trent Duda, unearthing a trove of purloined booty. This crackdown is part of a broader sweep to clamp down on local thievery shaking up the Metro area, as Springfield PD heightens its grip on crime.
Vazquez, now facing a litany of charges, including Breaking and Entering into a Building Nighttime for a Felony, Larceny Under $1200, and Possession of a Burglarious Instrument among others. The crowning offense in his catalogue of crimes comes with three counts of Armed & Masked Robbery, solidifying his reputation as a serial lawbreaker. The bailiffs will have their hands full when Vazquez, fronts court, where he'll have to account for his one-man crime wave.
