A brazen act of theft has left a Boston boutique owner reeling after surveillance footage captured two men swiping over $1,600 worth of clothes from Miss Mia Boutique on Newbury Street, with a woman accomplice threatening an employee with pepper spray. The owner, Cheng Ma, described the ordeal to NBC Boston, explaining how the woman lured a 19-year-old store associate to the back to facilitate the theft.
Describing the malefactors' audacity, Ma told NBC Boston "They took a lot of stuff like piles from here, all the jeans, everything, just stuffing the bags." The shaken employee, unharmed but threatened, was left to deal with the aftermath of the theft which is not an isolated incident, but part of an ongoing series of robberies troubling Newbury Street vendors.
Christopher Swank, co-owner of nearby Sniffs of Adventure, shared his frustration with NBC Boston, "We’re the ones that are putting in all the effort and working 12, 14, 16 hours a day. It’s like our passion. And for someone come in and to brazenly just take it, it’s kind of disgusting." Businesses on the street have reported similar crimes, highlighting a troubling pattern in the area.
The thefts extend beyond Miss Mia Boutique; the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office noted that several shoplifting arrests were made, revealing a cache of stolen merchandise from Boston-area retail stores. Monet Williams and Kayla Harris were arrested with clothes from Zara, Nike, Target, and Old Navy, and Richard Payne was apprehended for stealing luxury sunglasses from Sunglass Hut. Boston police continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to come forward.
