A teenage boy was reportedly shot and killed, with three other men injured, during a daytime attack in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, according to police.
Officials say the 16-year-old was shot in the head on a sidewalk in the 400 block of North Lavergne Avenue around 2:50 p.m. Sunday. First taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, he was pronounced dead shortly after. The Chicago Police Department has yet to publicly identify the victim. Police also reported to NBC Chicago that two suspects fired the shots before quickly fleeing northbound in a vehicle.
The three other victims transported themselves to West Suburban Hospital. A 25-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his thigh, another man of the same age was hit in the ankle, and a 21-year-old man was shot in the groin. As of the latest updates, all three were listed in good condition, according to authorities.
No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation conducted by Area Four detectives. This incident marks a grim continuation of violence, with CBS Chicago noting it as Chicago's second mass shooting in less than 24 hours. In an earlier event, a 19-year-old woman was tragically killed, and four others were injured following gunfire inside an Austin business.
The community has now been left to grapple with the sobering frequency of such violent events. As the police have made no arrests, they are urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring justice to the victims of these senseless shootings.
