The unsung heroes of Tennessee's public health system are finally getting their due as the state marks National Public Health Week. In a bid to celebrate the often overlooked, yet critical, contributions of these professionals, the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) has put a spotlight on their dedication and hard work.
According to a recent announcement by the TDH, the everyday efforts of public health workers have a profound impact on the well-being of Tennesseans, the department’s commissioner, Ralph Alvarado, MD, FACP, stated, "As Tennessee’s Health Commissioner, I see first-hand the hard work and dedication of our TDH staff members, but also the many others working in public health in our state,” he appreciates the significance of their roles and the importance of recognizing their contributions.
From primary care and dental services to innovative programs like CHANT for care coordination and GIFTS for pregnancy smoking cessation, local health departments are the backbone of public health services in the state. The youth-led TNSTRONG program and WIC which offers supplemental nutrition for mothers and young children, illustrate the varied support systems being provided, all aimed at keeping communities healthy.
Commissioner Alvarado stressed the importance of acknowledging the public health sector's contributions, despite their work being frequently overlooked "Local health departments and other health organizations are doing their part to improve public health every day by providing important health care to all Tennesseans. All too often this hard work goes unnoticed,” he said, urging residents to remember the collective efforts to maintain health standards across the state.
