In a significant milestone for veterans and military-connected students across Tennessee, the state has celebrated 10 years since the enactment of the Veterans Education Transition Support (VETS) Act. The law crafted a decade ago, has been fundamental in assisting former service members with their educational pursuits after the military, reports the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Since its introduction, the VETS Act has seen marked progress, with 8,700 credentials earned by veterans on VETS Campuses since 2019 alone.

The Act initially aimed to give veterans statewide support to ease their transition into higher education, but it has grown to encompass all military-connected students, highlighting Tennessee's dedication to backing these individuals at a critical time, when still about 140,000 veterans in the state are without college credentials, these initiatives have been no small contribution. With 39 campuses designated as VETS Campuses, Tennessee boasts a network committed to being military-friendly through a range of resources, including in-state tuition for those with veteran education benefits and exclusive programs that facilitate the adaptation to civilian academic life.

"We're immensely proud of our student veterans across the state, whose dedication and achievements exemplify resilience and commitment," Executive Director of THEC Steven Gentile expressed, further highlighting the recent legislative development. Governor Lee approved VETS Bravo last week, an augmented tier of support designed to bolster the VETS Act through stronger data collection, better recognition of military experience in academic credits, and targeted career placement services for the veteran student community.

Introduced by Representative John Regan and Senator Bill Powers and signed into law on March 27, 2024, the advanced legislation VETS Bravo mandates VETS Campuses to deepen their commitment through bettering data tracking, pushing the valorization of military experience within academia, and last but not least creating more robust career services tailored to veterans. As Tennessee commends itself on a decade of progress, the THEC vows to continue its staunch support for military-connected students, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in their communities and beyond, as the state looks forward to the enhanced support measures that will come with the latest legislative expansion.
