Webster Man, 68, Accused of Kidnapping and Indecent Assault of Child at Massachusetts BeachSource: Webster Police

A 68-year-old Webster man, Walter Fanion, is behind bars on accusations of kidnap and indecent assault of a juvenile after allegedly luring a young girl into his car at Memorial Beach in Massachusetts. This chilling episode, which unfolded on the Patriot's Day holiday, has spurred an investigation to ascertain if there are more victims.

According to authorities, Fanion, from Southbridge, engaged the girl in conversation by talking about his dog before she wound up in his vehicle. After touching her inappropriately, he reportedly dropped her near her grandmother's home, where the child disclosed the disturbing encounter, as NBC Boston reports. He then, allegedly had the audacity to tell her he would return to Memorial Beach the next day at 11:30 a.m., setting the stage for his arrest.

Fanion faces a multitude of severe charges including kidnapping, enticing a child under 16, and four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. Currently, he is being held on a $75,040 cash bail. Officers were clued in by the child's ability to provide unique characteristics of Fanion's vehicle, leading to his apprehension as described by the WHDH report.

"If she doesn't come forward and disclose this, there's nothing stopping him from thinking he got away with it, and going down there and reoffending," Webster Police Chief Michael Shaw emphasized in the wake of the arrest. Officers from local and surrounding departments, including the Southern Worcester County Counter Crime and Drug Task Force (SWCCCDTF), were on alert and successfully caught Fanion when he returned to the beach, as detailed by MassLive.

The Webster Police Department is now seeking the public's help to determine if Fanion may be linked to additional similar crimes. They urge anyone, who might have had similar encounters with Fanion, or whose children recognize him and may have had inappropriate interactions, to reach out to the Webster Police Department Detective Bureau at 508-943-1212.
