Weekend Freeway Closures Set to Delay Phoenix Drivers Due to Improvement ProjectsSource: Arizona Department of Transportation

Motorists in the Phoenix area are in for a weekend of detours and delays as several freeway closures and restrictions are scheduled due to ongoing improvement projects. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the eastbound US 60 will be fully closed between Interstate 10 and Mill Avenue in Tempe from Friday night until early Monday morning.

The ADOT announcement details that the closure, starting at 10 p.m. Friday and concluding at 4 a.m. Monday, April 29, is necessary for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. In addition, eastbound Interstate 10 will be narrowed down to three lanes between 40th Street and Baseline Road, and multiple ramps will be closed including all ramps from I-10 to eastbound US 60 and the westbound I-10 on-ramp at Baseline Road. Drivers are advised to travel from eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in Chandler to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to bypass the blockage,

Elsewhere in Tempe, southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) will also face a temporary shutdown between US 60 and Guadalupe Road starting from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday due to pavement improvement. Both US 60 ramps to southbound Loop 101 and the southbound Loop 101 on-ramps at University Drive, will be inaccessible during the maintenance work. Traffic can divert using the southbound Price frontage road or by utilizing local alternate routes such as southbound Dobson Road or McClintock Drive to avoid the closure.

Near Sky Harbor Airport, 32nd Street will be off-limits in both directions from I-10 to Elwood Street from Friday night through early Monday morning, April 29, for ramp reconstruction. The westbound I-10 off-ramp at 32nd Street will be closed this weekend while the eastbound I-10 off-ramp at 32nd Street remains shuttered until June. Detours will be available through 24th or 40th streets. Reconstruction activities will also lead to the closure of the northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) off-ramp at Cactus Road for about two months starting from the early hours of April 29, Monday, alternates such as exiting at Shea Boulevard may be used to reach Cactus Road.

ADOT urges drivers to plan ahead for these roadway impediments and to stay up-to-date with real-time highway conditions available on their Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, through the az511 app, or by calling 511. These transportation updates make it clear, Phoenix residents will need to pack a dose of patience along with their travel plans this weekend.
