A devastating house fire on Chicago's South Side claimed the life of a woman Thursday night, according to CBS Chicago. The fire erupted in the 3600 block of South Giles Avenue, with smoke seen billowing from the residence shortly after 11:20 p.m.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, the woman, who has not been identified, succumbed to smoke inhalation at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Investigators ruled the accident started in the basement, and are set to fully investigate to understand fully what may have sparked the blaze.
According to the Chicago Fire Department's X account, the fire was extinguished swiftly, but not before it exacted its tragic toll. Immediate medical attention was administered as the victim was transported in critical condition, highlighting the perilous reality of urban fires.
