A hail of bullets tore through the quiet of an Orange Mound home late Wednesday night, wounding a woman in the leg as she huddled with her child. The Memphis Police Department responded swiftly to the scene on the 700 block of Semmes Street, near Park Avenue, after an aggravated assault call came in at around 11:30 p.m., as reported by FOX13 Memphis.
The victim, found to have a gunshot wound to her left knee, recounted to officers the terror of bullets piercing her home's walls. She was swiftly sent by the Memphis Fire Department to the hospital, and her condition stabilized to non-critical, as detailed by the FOX13 Memphis report.
Memphis Police have yet to release details on potential suspects or the motive behind the gunfire that shook the Semmes Street residence. What is known, through the reports by WREG, is that aside from the injured woman, two other individuals were present during the shooting but emerged physically unscathed.
Residents of the area are left to grapple with the echo of gunfire and the sobering reality that violence intruded upon a seemingly safe home. "It is unclear if anyone was injured," was the initial understanding of the event, as Action News 5 reported in the early stages of the investigation. However, damaging evidence soon definitely surfaced, revealing the injury to the woman and the close call for the child in her arms.
The Memphis Police Department continues to thoroughly investigate the shooting, urging anyone with information to come forward and help bring those responsible to justice.
