In a typical bust-turned-drug-trafficking arrest, Worcester Police took a man into custody after he was found with an assortment of narcotics. The suspect, Joseph Baez, 46, of Worcester, encountered the law when he decided to ride his motorcycle on the sidewalk on Oread Street yesterday, according to Worcester Police Department's press release.
Officers pulled Baez over around 9:15 am, noting that his reckless maneuvering posed a risk to pedestrians. A subsequent search escalated quickly when the police spotted hypodermic needles in his fanny pack, which, led to the discovery of crack cocaine, fentanyl, and a bundle of cash tucked under his clothing. The Worcester Police Department's press release indicated that Baez was operating an unregistered and uninsured motorcycle, and he was also driving on a revoked license.
Back at the station, the grim inventory tallied up to $1,090 in cash, 18 grams of crack cocaine, and 5.5 grams of fentanyl. Baez is now facing serious charges including trafficking in Class B 18-36 grams, possession of a Class A with intent, among others related to his vehicle irregularities.
Baez's arrest is a single thread in the larger tapestry of drug trafficking that law enforcement is determined to unpick. In effect, it is but a snapshot of a much more extensive effort to curb the distribution and usage of drugs, which continues to challenge the community and the police force tasked with its safety.
