Chaos erupted in downtown Nashville early Friday morning when a man was gunned down at the WeGo station during the rush-hour frenzy. A 19-year-old suspect has been slapped with attempted homicide charges, police said.
Dejuan Prime, the accused shooter, reportedly opened fire after a heated exchange on the steps of the busy transit hub. The confrontation escalated when the 20-year-old victim, whom Prime did not know, felt threatened and tossed a cup of coffee on him before attempting to flee, according to WKRN. Prime is alleged to have pursued and shot the man multiple times, landing the victim in Vanderbilt University Medical Center in stable condition.
It was during the early morning news coverage of increased crime in the area that FOX 17 reporter Kylie Walker and her crew heard the gunshots. Authorities, reacting to the brazen violence, nabbed Prime a short distance from the station. An officer recognized him as the shooter and confiscated a nine millimeter semi-automatic from his waistband, as per FOX 17 News.
Conveying gratitude for the prompt response, a WeGo spokesperson stated, "We appreciate that MNPD has an enhanced police presence in that area of downtown. We will continue to work closely with them, and assist however needed," a sentiment echoed in a WSMV report. Despite the morning's violence, WeGo services were not disrupted and continued to shuffle commuters throughout the incident.
