A tragic car accident claimed two lives and left another individual injured on a Michigan freeway early on Mother's Day. According to the Detroit Free Press, the incident occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. on I-275 near Ann Arbor Trail when a southbound Ford Edge, driven by a 46-year-old woman from Jasper, swerved across the median.

The vehicle was projected up the embankment, landing onto the northbound lanes and subsequently rolling over. Striking the overturned SUV, the driver of a northbound Buick LaCrosse caught in the accident’s chaotic wake sustained minor injuries. As confirmed by Michigan State Police, initial reports show that the driver lost control before crossing the median. The victims, a Jasper woman and a 21-year-old passenger from Canton were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Currently it has not been determined why the driver left the roadway," Lieutenant Mike Shaw was quoted as saying in the CBS News Detroit coverage of the disaster. Shaw added a somber note to the already grievous event, revealing, "Unfortunately, neither the driver nor the passenger who died in the crash were wearing their seatbelts."

Following the accident, authorities closed the freeway to conduct on-scene investigations, reported ClickOnDetroit. The freeway has since reopened as the state police continue their inquiry into this harrowing misfortune, with forthcoming reports from the medical examiner expected to shed additional light on the incident's circumstances.
