Chaos erupted on an Atlanta street when an armed confrontation between a suspect and police officers led to gunfire, leaving one man dead and three officers wounded. The incident unfolded on Saturday evening in a commercial area where the officers were met with a man who was armed with both a handgun and a knife, as reported by WABE.
During what Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum described as a "struggle," shots were fired, injuring the officers and fatally wounding the suspect. The identities of the officers and the deceased have not been released. However, Chief Schierbaum did reveal that two officers will likely have to undergo surgery to treat their injuries – one for a shot to the shoulder and the other to the leg. A third officer sustained a grazing wound.
The violence spilled over into the early hours of Sunday at Elleven45 Lounge in Buckhead, where another shooting occurred. Two died, and four were injured after a fight broke out in the nightclub, according to WABE. The fray in the popular club started around 2:30 a.m., and authorities are still in search of the suspect responsible for the nightclub carnage.
At a press conference, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens voiced his concerns, stating, "Once again you see that guns are causing harm in our communities." He had previously visited the wounded officers at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he found them to be alert, conscious, and breathing, as reported by WABE.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is taking the lead to thoroughly investigate the officer-involved shooting, confirmed Chief Schierbaum. Meanwhile, details about the nightclub shooting are scarce as investigators comb through surveillance footage to piece together the events that left a young man and woman dead, with four others surviving their wounds.
