A batch of Athens-Clarke County voters found themselves on the wrong end of a redistricting error that misplaced 66 residents into the incorrect commission district, officials unearthed. These voters, hailing from the stretch between 147 and 545 Oglethorpe Avenue, had been mistakenly shunted into Commission District 5 when they truly belonged in District 2, a discrepancy that carries weight in this year's election cycle, according to Athens-Clarke County official website.
Not a single vote, was compromised, say authorities, but the mistake saw these residents being handed precinct cards for the wrong district earlier in the year. The Athens-Clarke County Elections Department divulged that they are now making a doorstep crusade to correct the misinformation before the forthcoming polls on May 21, according to an announcement on the Athens-Clarke County official website.
Changes made last year to voting lines have touched nearly two-thirds of Athens-Clarke County's registered voters, leading to some predictable chaos. It wasn't until a vigilant resident alerted the Elections Department on May 13, by confronting an unexpected absentee ballot, that the issue came to light. Fresh off the press, the elections team confirmed that a computer glitch was to blame for this residential rerouting.
Despite the hiccup, Athens-Clarke County officials are quick to assert their commitment to the sanctity of the voting process. "Elections staff would like to extend our thanks to the voters, who alerted us to this important issue," Charlotte Sosebee, Elections Department Director, told the Athens-Clarke County website. "We take great pride in the accuracy of our elections and immediately acted upon their information to investigate, and correct the issue."
The announcement also serves as a reminder for voters to double-check their ballots and precinct card information using the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter Page to avoid any future confusions. As of May 16, all local check-in poll pads should reflect the corrected data, ensuring no more residents of Oglethorpe Avenue will accidentally step into the wrong voting booth.
