The Boston Police Department (BPD) has issued a stern warning about the risks of drugged drinks in social settings and is strongly urging victims to come forward. According to a recent community alert, invisibly dangerous substances like Rohypnol, GHB, and Ketamine can be easily slipped into drinks, leading to disorientation and leaving individuals vulnerable to harm.
In a proactive move to curb these incidents, the BPD is calling on the community to vigilantly protect themselves and their friends. They suggest implementing a ‘buddy system’ at gatherings to prevent getting separated. Additionally, they advise to never leave drinks unattended and to always receive them directly from the bartender or server. In a potent reminder of the hidden threats, the BPD notes that these drugs are "scentless, colorless, and tasteless," making it virtually impossible to detect their presence without special aids.
For individuals looking to safeguard their beverages, the BPD recommends using drink test strips or special nail polish that changes color when in contact with spiked substances. Creative solutions are available to cover drinks, and these should be used consistently. Another key suggestion is to "watch your drink at all times," as it's not uncommon for assailants to spike drinks when they're left unwatched, even for a moment.
The department also reminds the public to trust their instincts, to quickly seek help if feelings of dizziness or nausea arise, and to be wary of strangers who may try to isolate individuals from their friends. "Please be aware of any uncharacteristic behavior from your acquaintances," the BPD cautions, signifying the need to be alert to the sometimes-subtle signs of drug effects. In addition to self-protection, citizens are asked to keep a lookout for others who might be in distress or wandering unsafely, urging an immediate call to the police in such scenarios.
This advisory comes amid a wider push for awareness about the dangers of date rape drugs, which have historically been a persistent problem in nightlife and social areas. The BPD is firm in its bid to prevent these incidents and is adamant that victims, or those who witness suspicious behavior, report to the authorities to help stop perpetrators from inflicting harm on others in the community.
