A quick-acting Boston police officer on detail duty intervened and arrested a 17-year-old boy after a heated confrontation escalated into an armed threat last Thursday, authorities said. The officer was on duty near Tremont and Northampton Street when the incident unfolded just after noon. According to the Boston Police Department, the teen was involved in a verbal altercation that quickly spiraled when he appeared to reach for a weapon.
The situation could swiftly have turned to worse had not the officer been present to defuse it. As the argument heated up, the accused teenager allegedly threatened the other individual, prompting them to run away. The police officer proceeded to swiftly detain the suspect, who resisted but was eventually handcuffed. In the frisk that followed, a Davis Industries Model 0 .22 caliber firearm loaded with two rounds of ammunition was found in the youngster's hooded sweatshirt pocket.
The young man, whose name has not been released due to his juvenile status, now faces multiple charges stemming from the incident. He was arrested and charged with delinquent to wit; unlawful possession of a firearm, delinquent to wit; assault with a dangerous weapon, and delinquent to wit; unlawful possession of ammunition as detailed by the Boston Police. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court following this encounter.
Incidents such as these highlight the persistent issue of youth violence and gun possession plaguing many city streets. The officer’s prompt response likely averted what could have potentially unfolded into a much graver situation. The arraignment of the 17-year-old is awaited as the community grapples yet again with the blight of firearms too readily falling into young hands.
