In a move blending community outreach with fitness, Boston's District C-11 police officers have teamed up with the Bowdoin Street Health Center to launch a weekly walking group in the neighborhood. Officially dubbed "The Bowdoin Street Striders," the initiative aims to encourage residents to engage in exercise while striking up a conversation with the cops on the beat. The group, as reported on the official Boston Police Department website, hits the pavement weekly on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m.
Starting from the base at 230 Bowdoin Street, the program invites anyone interested to join the officers for a stroll through the Bowdoin/Geneva area. Addressing both the heart and the heart of the community, these walks present an informal platform to discuss issues, share concerns, or merely exchange friendly banter. And while they walk, participants can benefit from the very real, if incidental, cardio that comes with pounding the neighborhood's sidewalks.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between law enforcement and the community. Nationwide, police are working to build trust and demystify their presence. Boston Police Department's C-11 district supports this approach, believing that each shared walk helps bridge gaps. Walks depend on good weather and are hosted by Bowdoin Street Health Center.
