Two people were rushed to local hospitals Sunday night after Boston Police responded to a report of a person shot at 1991 Columbus Avenue in Roxbury around 7:49 p.m. Officers arrived to find the aftermath of a shooting that left both victims with unknown injuries, and by Sunday night no arrests had been made.
According to NBC Boston, police have not yet established whether both people were actually shot, leaving open the possibility that one or both sustained injuries some other way during the incident. The investigation remains active, and no further details about a suspect or motive have been released.
The shooting unfolded at an address with deep roots in the neighborhood's history. The building at 1989–1991 Columbus Avenue was constructed in 1911 by builder Morris Weinstein and architect David Silverman, and has since been preserved as multi-family affordable housing by the nonprofit developer Urban Edge, according to the Jamaica Plain Historical Society. The property also sits within the Dixwell Street Apartments Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 2024, per the Federal Register.
A Neighborhood on Edge After a String of Shootings
Sunday's incident is the latest in a run of gun violence that has unsettled Roxbury over the past several weeks. An August 26 shooting on Wardman Road sent one victim to the hospital, and just days later, on August 29, another shooting left a victim who later died, hours after a neighborhood carnival, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage of the Wardman Road case.
Those incidents followed a predawn shooting on Shawmut Avenue in July and a hospitalization near Cheney Street in May, part of a pattern of recurring gunfire that has touched multiple corners of the neighborhood this year. In November 2025, a double shooting in Roxbury led to charges against a suspect identified as Pernell Brown.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
The cluster of Roxbury incidents stands in contrast to broader citywide trends. Preliminary crime statistics published by the Boston Police Department in May 2026 show that shooting victims across the city fell 22 percent, from 36 in early 2025 to 28 during the same period this year. The figures provide a citywide context for the Roxbury incidents.
