Residents of Chicago's 11th District are on high alert after a spate of robberies with a stark and chilling pattern has emerged in the area. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert warning of incidents where victims were either sitting in their vehicles or were outside on the public way when they were approached by assailants.
According to the alert obtained by the Chicago Police Department, the culprits are described as two male individuals, possibly between the ages of 13 and 25, sporting dark sweatshirts and black pants. Reports indicate that these attackers either displayed a handgun or insinuated its presence while demanding money and valuables. Additionally, in a disturbing twist, two of the victims were assaulted during the robbery with their hands and feet.
These brazen daylight and nighttime heists have taken place at various locations, including the 3400 block of W. Chicago Ave. and the 800 block of W. Kedzie Ave., with times ranging from early morning at 1:30 AM to the more crowded evening hours at 6:40 PM. The tactics used by the offenders are opportunistic and cold, exploiting moments when people feel a semblance of safety in their routine travels.
A particularly concerning detail, as noted by the police, is that in several instances the perpetrators were seen riding a bicycle, indicating a degree of premeditation and planning that allowed them to make a swift getaway. Community members are urged to be vigilant and to note any distinctive characteristics of the offenders, such as scars, limps, acne, or teeth, which could help in their identification.
The police advise against resisting during a robbery and caution not to pursue assailants in flight, instead, they urge anyone with information to remember that it might be crucial in bringing these individuals to justice. Should witnesses be present, their contact information should be requested and provided to the police. In the event of such an incident, citizens are encouraged to call 9-1-1 immediately and, if possible, remain at the scene without disturbing any potential evidence. More details can be found on the police department's website.
