Residents of the 002nd District in Wentworth have been put on high alert as motor vehicle thefts are on the rise, the Chicago Police Department warns. Multiple incidents have been reported where victims have returned to their parking spots to find their vehicles stolen or with the steering columns damaged. Thieves have been indiscriminate, targeting a variety of makes and models.
The series of thefts occurred within close temporal and geographical proximity, suggesting a pattern of criminal activity that has put the community on edge. One theft occurred on the 4500 block of South Drexel Blvd. sometime between May 23 at 8:00 P.M. and May 24 at 7:30 A.M. Another took place on the 900 block of East 46th St., having the steering columns of the parked vehicles made the residents feel more vulnerable, between May 23 at 10:00 P.M. and May 24 at 8:00 A.M. Also, a theft was reported on the 1000 block of East 44th St. between May 24 at 11:00 P.M. and May 25 at 12:00 P.M., as cited by the Chicago Police Department's official release.
To combat the surge in thefts, the police are advising citizens to take proactive steps. They recommend not leaving keys in the vehicle or allowing it to run unattended. Additionally, they suggest installing and using anti-theft devices, parking in well-lit areas, and ensuring vehicles are locked securely. Suspicious activity should be reported immediately by calling 911 and providing detailed descriptions of any potential offenders or their vehicles.
In an effort to prevent these thefts, both the police and community organizations have made resources available to help car owners secure their vehicles. Kia and Hyundai owners, often targeted due to known vulnerabilities in some models, can obtain anti-theft steering wheel locks from local CAPS offices. Furthermore, all police districts are offering residents the chance to have their vehicle's catalytic converter etched with a special traceable marking. GPS tracking devices, which many residents have installed, might be effective deterrents and the city is offering reimbursements to residents who register with the city's program, as noted by the advisory.
The community has been encouraged to stay vigilant and work together to keep their neighborhood safe. As part of the ongoing effort to thwart vehicle thefts, citizens are urged to look out for each other and to be mindful of the importance of securing their property at all times.
