A string of bold break-ins has left businesses in Chicago's 14th and 17th Districts reeling after burglars targeted several stores in the early hours of May 10th. According to the Chicago Police Department's website, the thieves shattered front glass doors to make their way into the establishments before making off with cash and cash register drawers.
The crime spree kicked off at 1:25 AM on the 2900 West block of Irving Park Rd and continued with a brazen series of burglaries occurring subsequently on North California Ave, North Avondale Ave, and North Milwaukee Ave over the course of the night. Reports indicate the suspects used a light-colored Honda CRV with Florida plates to quickly to escape the scenes. Detectives are currently on the hunt for three male African American suspects, estimated to be between 17 and 20 years old, and seen wearing all-black during the heists.
Business owners have been put on high alert and are urged to take precautions. Protective measures like the installation of ArmorPlast, an unbreakable shield over existing glass, and ensuring functional surveillance cameras were suggested by authorities as a deterrent to similar crimes. Police are asking the community to stay vigilant and to immediately contact authorities by calling 911 with any information that may lead to the apprehension of the suspects involved.
With the present threat at large, the local shop owners are advised to "be aware of this crime and alert nearby businesses," as per the Chicago Police Department's warning broadcasted after the incidents.
