A string of commercial armed robberies has been reported in the 9th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th, and 25th Districts, indicating a possible pattern of criminal activity that's unsettling local business owners and patrons alike.
According to a public alert released by Chicago Police, the series of incidents involved assailants entering a variety of establishments including liquor stores, taverns, bars, and late-night fast food joints where they brandished handguns and demanded money and wallets there were instances where the offenders discharged their weapons into the air causing further distress among victims and witnesses.
The department has provided a timeline of the crimes, citing attacks in locations ranging from the 5700 block of N. Milwaukee to the 4700 block of N Elston, with the latest occurrence reported just past midnight on May 10. Descriptions suggest the group consists of 3-4 African American males, aged between 20-30 years, recognized by their face masks, dark clothing, and gloves during these heists.
As the authorities urge vigilance, recommendations for business owners include the adoption of safety measures such as video surveillance installation, late-night buzzer systems, minimizing cash in registers and utilizing drop boxes, supplementing with significant lighting both inside and outside of premises and to remain observant of any suspicious activity this includes reporting unfamiliar vehicles or individuals that seem out of place to 911 immediately and fostering tighter community bonds among neighbors.
