Chicago residents in the 8th District (Chicago Lawn) are on alert after a series of armed robberies and vehicular hijackings have rocked the community. According to the Chicago Police Department, 1 to 3 male suspects involved in these violent crimes are reportedly demanding vehicles and personal belongings at gunpoint.
The alert, published by the Chicago Police Department, specifically warns residents of a string of incidents that have occurred in closely timed succession. One victim was approached on the 2500 block of W. 73rd St. on April 29, and others have since faced similar confrontations, with the most recent occurrence taking place on the 7200 block of S. Western on May 14. The incidents are said to have happened at varying times, ranging from 5:30 a.m. to as late as 9:20 p.m.
Perpetrators described are all African American males, with heights varying from as short as 5'5" to as tall as 5'11", donning dark clothing. Some descriptions are more detailed, offering potential age ranges from 20 to 30 years old and weight between 130-200 lbs. In the face of these alarming occurrences, residents are advised to stay vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately, as per the Chicago Police Department.
The Chicago Police Department also urges anyone approached by a witness to request contact information. In the case of an incident, dialing 9-1-1 promptly and staying on the scene when possible can aid in the quick response and investigation of the crime.
