Chicago police have slapped cuffs on a 25-year-old man, accused of robbing a young woman at gunpoint earlier this month. Billy Cokley Jr., who hails from the 0-100 block of E. 59th Street, is facing a serious felony charge for the crime that played out in the Loop, officials stated Thursday.
Hauled in by the cops on Wednesday afternoon near the intersection that splits W. 59th Street, Cokley was pegged as the gunman involved in a frightening incident that occurred at around 7:38 p.m. on May 2, according to Chicago police. On a CTA property situated in the 500 block of N. State Street, he allegedly menaced the woman, taking her belongings by force and fear.
The aftermath of the armed heist saw the victim, also 25, stripped of her property amidst the bustling public transport landscape of Chicago’s 1st District. Poised for a detention hearing today at the courthouse on 2600 S. California, the accused stands formally charged with one count of felony armed robbery, wielding a firearm as his tool of trade.
Details on the apprehension of Cokley, which took place at about 1:38 p.m. on 59th Street's opposite end in the 1100 block of S. State Street, remain sparse. Taken into custody in the Second District, barely a stone's throw from where the original crime was committed, the police have been tight-lipped with further particulars, indicating simply that Cokley was "placed into custody and charged accordingly."
Neither the Chicago Police Department nor representatives for the court were immediately available for additional comment on the case or on Cokley's legal representation. As the gears of justice grind forward, the court is anticipated to shine a light on the harrowing details of a confrontation that left an unnamed woman victimized and a community on high alert.
