An online meetup to buy some items turned violent Friday night on Elgin's south side, leaving an adult man with a gunshot wound and detectives scrambling for answers. Officers were dispatched at 8:48 pm to the 600 block of South Liberty Street, where they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound before he was rushed to an area hospital for treatment.
According to the Elgin Police Department, the shooting stemmed from online messaging that led to an in-person meetup, where the parties involved had planned to purchase items. Police have not said what platform the buyer and seller used to arrange the exchange, nor have they explained why the meeting took place at a residential address rather than a monitored location. Major Investigations Division detectives responded to the scene and continue to investigate the shooting, which is being tracked under case number 2026-52254.
The incident unfolded in the same South Liberty Street corridor that has seen serious violent crime before — in 2013, a resident of the 800 block was convicted of attempted murder and solicitation for murder after shooting a victim in 2008 and later trying to arrange a hit on a witness from behind bars, according to CBS Chicago. That case, however, is unrelated to Friday's shooting and is cited here only as historical background on the area.

What makes this case notable is that Elgin police already maintain a built-in alternative for exactly this kind of transaction. The department operates official Internet Exchange Locations at its headquarters at 151 Douglas Ave., including a 24-hour monitored space inside the station lobby and a designated, video-surveilled parking spot at the southeast corner of Douglas Avenue and Symphony Way, according to the City of Elgin. Police publicly advise buyers and sellers to avoid completing a deal if the other party refuses to meet at one of those designated safe zones, though it remains unknown whether either party in Friday's meetup was aware of that option.
