Chicago residents are bracing for a turbulent Memorial Day weekend as forecasters warn of severe weather conditions sweeping across the region. According to the National Weather Service Chicago, there is a significant risk of thunderstorms today with a 40 percent chance of showers and potentially severe storms developing after 3:00 P.M., intensifying clouds with gusts as high as 25 mph could spell a turbulent start to the holiday.
Thunderstorms are expected to hit the Chicago area tonight, predominantly before 1:00 A.M., with new rainfall amounts between half and three-quarters of an inch. The forecast also predicts sunny skies come Saturday with a high of 70 degrees but not before causing possible disruptions and hazarding conditions through the night. This was complemented by an updated advisory from the National Weather Service which included a limited tornado risk, hail up to quarter size, and wind gusts potentially reaching 70 mph. Spotters may be called upon for duty to track the severe weather patterns that are predicted to move east-northeast at speeds between 35 to 50 mph throughout the day.
The city faces a continued barrage of hazardous weather beyond today, with elevated thunderstorm risks lasting through the weekend and into next week, particularly on Sunday afternoon. The risk of severe thunderstorms looms large with a limited chance of hail and damaging winds. Residents in proximity to Lake Michigan have been alerted to a significant thunderstorm risk that may bring waterspouts and thunderstorm wind gusts of up to 50 knots over the waters.
Safety concerns are paramount as posts from NWS Chicago underscore the limited window to prepare for the incoming line of severe storms, threatening damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes, with the most significant threat posed to areas along and west of the I-39 corridor until 9:00 A.M. Locals and visitors alike must have multiple contingencies for receiving timely weather warnings, ensuring they remain alert and secure throughout the weekend's turbulent conditions.
#Memorial Day weekend will start off on the stormy side. While storms may occur this morning, additional storms with a higher chance for severe weather will occur this afternoon and evening. Be weather aware today. #ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/gUugYI8owJ
