In a string of bold thefts, police vehicles in Chicago's 16th District have become targets for break-ins and theft. Law enforcement has issued a community alert, warning residents and fellow officers of a series of incidents involving a dark-colored SUV, following a suspicious pattern of crimes against parked vehicles, as reported by the Chicago Police Department.

The Chicago Police Department cautioned that both marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles have been victimized by thefts in residential areas. The offenders are reported to quickly pull up, shatter a window to gain entry, and swiftly take abscond with items from both the passenger compartment and trunk. This spree of thefts took place across several nights, with the criminals specifically focusing their efforts on police equipment and personal belongings stored within these vehicles.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the thefts occurred over three consecutive days. The first incident was reported between the night of April 28 and the morning of April 29 on N Owen Ave. Subsequently, another instance took place from the afternoon of April 29 to the early morning hours of April 30 on N Oriole Ave, followed by an early morning theft on April 30 at N Keota Ave.

In light of these incidents, local authorities are urging residents to be extra vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious behavior. They recommend the installation of surveillance cameras as a deterrent and to ensure these devices are properly recording to aid in the identification and capture of the culprits. Should anyone encounter questionable individuals or vehicles, especially those resembling a dark-colored SUV, they are strongly advised to not engage but to instead contact 911 with a detailed description of the offenders and their vehicle, including any discernible license plates.
