Chicago streets are about to get a whole lot tighter for rule-breakers this weekend. The Chicago Police Department is ramping up its DUI Saturation Patrol in the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District starting this Friday at 6 p.m., and running through to the early hours of Saturday, at 2 a.m., as reported by the Chicago Police Department. This initiative hones in on impaired drivers, but cops will also be zeroing in on speed demons and safety belt scofflaws.

During this blitz, cops equipped with speed detection gear are going to scour the streets, and a Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit might also be out there, so those who're snagged for DUIs can quickly get processed without being hauled to jail right away, relieving the system somewhat, but the units also hand out I-Bonds on the spot. The crackdown’s purpose is straightforward: to prevent traffic violations and enhance safety by saturating the area with hawk-eyed officers on the lookout.

A similar operation that unfolded in the 1st (Central) District the previous week had a clear outcome. On that occasion, authorities did not nab anyone for DUI, but they did dish out a variety of citations, including four for unsafe vehicles and two for insurance violations, while speed was the most ticketed offense with seven violations, as per the  Chicago Police Department.
