A teenage male has been slapped with 27 felony charges following a string of armed robberies and vehicular hijackings in Chicago, according to authorities. The 17-year-old offender, whose name has not been released due to his juvenile status, is accused of participating in various criminal acts across different parts of the city dating back to late 2023. Among the charges are twenty-five counts of robbery armed with a firearm and two counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking using a firearm, reported Chicago Police Department's website.
Arrested on May 21, 2024, the young male suspect was nabbed by the combined efforts of the Robbery Task Force and the Vehicular Hijacking Task Force in the 1100 block of S. Hamilton. Over a month, the duo task force managed to put together pieces that connected the juvenile to highly violent crimes that saw victims ranging in age from 19 to 58 years old terrorized at gunpoint. Spawning late last year, the alleged crime spree included various incidents where individuals were approached by assailants wielding firearms and demanded to hand over their belongings, with some victims also having their vehicles forcibly taken.
The robberies and hijackings painted a grim picture of a city grappling with brazen daytime and nighttime crimes alike. The incidents collectively chronicled a desperate grasping for the property and control of citizens' movements, striking in multiple districts. Notably, the 25th District was hit hard, with five incidences reported within its jurisdiction, spanning from the 5900 block of W. North Ave. to the 2000 block of N. Lawler.
According to authorities, the episodes unfolded successively, with the earliest reported incident occurring on November 27 in the 3500 block of W. McLean and the last being a grim ushering in of the new year on December 31 in the 800 block of W. Blackhawk. Alongside the single-handed terror that this juvenile purportedly inflicted, he was identified as “one of the offenders,” which suggests a lurking presence of accomplices not yet accounted for by police.
No further information has been provided by law enforcement as of yet, and the investigation is ongoing.
