In a city increasingly beleaguered by crime, a series of burglaries and thefts has struck the heart of Chicago's trade community, targeting plumbers and electricians with merciless precision. According to the Chicago Police Department, multiple offenders have been forcefully entering businesses and work vehicles across several districts, pilfering anything from tools to equipment. Evidence suggests they've been using a 2024 Black Volkswagen Atlas with Illinois plates to make their getaways, leaving a trail of shattered doors and broken windows in their wake.
The crimes span a broad swath of the city's north and west sides, with incidents recorded on the 4300 block of N. Lincoln, the 1100 block of W. Webster, and various other vicinities between January 18 and May 12, 2024—a series of early morning crimes that shattered the peace and left business owners counting the costs. The thieves have been described as one to three African American males, clad in dark clothing that allows them to disappear into the night just as swiftly as they emerge. The sweep of their crimes crosses a patchwork of neighborhoods, casting shadows on the livelihoods of those who serve the city's homes and businesses.
The Chicago Police Department has released a video to the public in hopes of identifying the culprits, and they urge businesses to take preemptive measures like improving lighting around properties and keeping a vigilant eye for suspicious activity. Moreover, if video surveillance captures criminal behavior, they encourage owners to preserve the footage and to contact police without delay if victimized.
