The Clinton Police Department has confirmed the identity of a woman killed in a car crash on Highway 61 this past Saturday. Deborah Smith of Clinton was the victim of the head-on collision that occurred on N. Charles Seivers Boulevard, near Alpine Drive. The crash was reported at approximately 11:45 a.m., as indicated by the WVLT-TV coverage.

According to the initial investigation, a Honda Civic, driven by George Cooper, traveling eastbound lost control and veered into the westbound lanes after failing to handle a curve properly. Per an article from WBIR, the car then collided with Smith's Ford Escape. The impact redirected and caused the SUV to overturn and settle in the ditch line on the westbound side.

Emergency services, including police, fire crews, and EMS, responded to the crash site. Smith and a passenger were extricated from the overturned vehicle and rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. Upon arrival at the medical center, Smith was pronounced dead. Information regarding the conditions of the other injured parties has not been released, as the investigation is ongoing, a statement disclosed by the WYSH Radio report.

The Clinton Police Department conveyed that all findings from the investigation will be forwarded to the Anderson County District Attorney’s Office for review. The authorities have yet to determine whether charges will be filed against the driver who crossed the median, causing the fatal accident.
