Tragedy struck in Carlsbad, California, on Saturday when one person was killed in a fierce blaze that engulfed a duplex on Pine Avenue. Firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving a call around 1:30 p.m., battling flames that sent smoke billowing into the sky, visible from the I-5 freeway, according to FOX 5/KUSI.
The intense firefighting effort brought several engines to the 900 block of Pine Avenue. Despite their efforts, the fire claimed a life and resulted in at least one other person sustaining injuries, the extent of which was unknown at the time. As of Saturday evening, before 6 p.m., authorities had not yet released the identities of the victims. The Carlsbad Police updated the public, stating, “Eastbound Pine Ave at Harding St will remain closed for an unknown duration of time while investigators are on scene,” as reported by the City of Carlsbad Police Department.
In the wake of the incident, local roads were tangled with closures. Harding Street from Oak Avenue to Pine Avenue was sealed off as crews worked to extinguish the fire. Later, all roads, except for the affected portion of Pine Avenue, were reopened to traffic as the assessment and investigation into the fire proceeded.
The cause behind the deadly inferno has not been disclosed by officials, but the Carlsbad Fire Department indicated the fire had at least been contained. While first responders focused on their tasks, residents were urged to avoid the area, and those living nearby were left to grapple with the tragic events that unfolded in their community. The fire and subsequent fatality are under investigation, with further details pending as crews continue their on-site work in the aftermath of the calamity.
