Detroit residents on the east and southwest sides are stuck playing the waiting game this week as garbage collection is pushed back due to workforce shortages. GFL Environmental, the outgoing waste hauler mired in staffing woes, has asked folks to keep their curbs, and their patience, filled with trash bins a little longer. The transition period to new garbage contractor Priority Waste, kicking off June 3 is blamed for the snag.
"GFL is committed to servicing all east side and southwest customers through the weekend," reads a part of an announcement from the City of Detroit Department of Public Works. The message assures residents that no fines will be slapped on for bins overstaying their curbside welcome.
For concerned citizens eager to clear the clutter, the numbers to call are changing. Until June 3, affected residents on the east and southwest should keep GFL on speed dial at 866-772-8900. After the switch, it’s over to Priority Waste at 855-927-8365. Waste Management remains the go-to for Detroit's westside dwellers, reachable at 844-233-8764.
