Ex-Postal Worker Charged With Theft and Forgery After Stolen Mail Found in Stolen Car in Cobb County

A former postal worker is facing charges after Cobb County police found a cache of stolen mail in a stolen car she was driving. Ebony Williams, 39, was caught after police spotted the stolen vehicle in a Spring Road parking lot, according to TowneLaker.

Investigations revealed that the car was allegedly rented and not returned as per the agreement, leading the rental company to report it stolen. Williams, was connected to checks found among the stolen mail, a job she previously held as a U.S. Postal Service worker reportedly gave her access, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.

"During that time, it is believed that she took mail that she was supposed to deliver and some of that included checks that she retained for her own purposes,"Cobb County Police Sgt. Eric Smith told FOX 5 Atlanta. The police emphasized the incident was far from a victimless crime, with dozens of people deprived of checks intended for them.

Williams is now lodged in the Cobb County Jail, facing theft and forgery charges. Due to the involvement of U.S. mail, Postal Service inspectors are also part of the ongoing investigation. "I just want to emphasize the effort of these officers in what they did in locating the stolen car, the person responsible for it and then determining that person was related to other crimes as well," Sgt. Smith said in the statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
