Chicago's streets erupted in gunfire over the weekend, leaving two dead and 14 wounded as the city continues to grapple with the scourge of gun violence. Among the injured was a 68-year-old man, grazed by a bullet near his Humboldt Park home on Saturday evening, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. The victim was outside his residence in the 3200 block of West Beach Avenue when an unknown assailant opened fire, striking him in the ear.
Standing at a troubling crossroads, the incidents reported by CBS Chicago spanned the city, from South Woodlawn Avenue, where a man's life was snuffed out before he crashed into a wall, to West Locust Street, where an argument escalated to a shooting, injuring a man's foot. In another instance of the chaos unfurling, a 16-year-old boy found himself nursing a gunshot wound to the arm after being attacked by an unknown vehicle on West Wilcox.
The violence hit a wide demographic, with victims' ages ranging from 16 to 68. A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times on South May Street and quickly taken to Stroger Hospital, reported in good condition. Meanwhile, another shooting on West Chicago left a 25-year-old man with a leg wound around the late afternoon. These shootings serve as a grim reminder of the city's ongoing battle with gun violence, which shows no regard for age or circumstance.
While the weekend tally adds to a swell of community angst, the 68-year-old Humboldt Park resident was conveyed to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition, offering a small glimpse of hope amongst the relentless accounts of bloodshed. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, no arrests have been reported for this shooting, mirroring a broader theme of elusive justice as many assailants from the weekend's violence remain at large. The Saturday night violence additionally claimed another life on South State Street where a 30-year-old man succumbed to a chest wound inflicted during a fight that turned fatal.
