A fatal collision on Interstate 40 East at the Western Avenue underpass has claimed the life of a driver yesterday morning, according to Knoxville Police Department reports. The Knoxville Police Department is currently probing the incident which occurred around 1:55 a.m., after responders arrived at the scene to find a black Chevy Tahoe that had slammed into the bridge.
The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the location. Knoxville Police Department officials have shared little regarding the circumstances leading to the crash. "Based on investigation conducted at the scene, including witness statements, the Tahoe was traveling east on I-40 when it suddenly swerved to the right for unknown reasons and struck a bridge," KPD revealed in a statement obtained by WATE.
The ongoing investigation is being led by KPD crash reconstruction experts. In a statement to WBIR, authorities stated that the reason for the driver's abrupt swerve remains a mystery. KPD has withheld the name of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
