A chaotic scene erupted at a South Beach tow yard when an angry man, now identified as Wizdom Fripp, attempted a brazen escape with his towed vehicle without settling the bill, which led to his arrest on Saturday night. Miami Beach Police, ready for a high-stakes operation, made their presence known in SWAT gear, according to WSVN.
Trouble started when Fripp, who was initially allowed into Tremont Towing's lot to retrieve personal items, decided to take matters into his hands, causing havoc as he hit other parked cars including a BMW while trying to exit, said employees; the arrest report detailed all events leading to police involvement. An employee is heard saying on a recording, "He's trying to get out!" as Fripp maneuvered his way out of the yard. Employees quickly sprang into action trying to thwart his escape by forming a barrier with tow trucks but not before one of their trucks took a hit.
During the fray, someone from Tremont Towing made a distress call narrating the unfolding situation to the dispatcher: "This is Tremont Towing. I have a gentleman here who came inside the yard and is trying to exit the yard with his vehicle," an employee informed the authorities amid the burgeoning melee. Despite the chaos, the incident resulted in no injuries, and normal business operations resumed after police managed to bring the situation under control and remove Fripp from the scene.
The prolonged standoff concluded with Fripp surrendering and subsequently being taken into custody, officers had tried to negotiate his surrender unsuccessfully at first but, "Finally gave up. finally gave up," remarked an employee in relief once the ordeal ended. Throughout the incident, people looking to reclaim their towed vehicles found themselves at a temporary impasse with access restricted by police on the scene, an employee explained how the situation had rendered immediate car pickups untenable: "There is a very potentially dangerous situation," before assuring that retrieval would be delayed.
