A violent altercation in Southwest Memphis has left one man injured after a shooting occurred in the early hours of the morning. Police responded to the incident in the 4600 block of Horn Lake Road shortly after 2 a.m., according to WREG. The victim was found with a gunshot wound and was transported to Regional One in critical condition, but was later upgraded to non-critical.
Investigators are closely examining the circumstances around the shooting which took place across the street from Geeter K-8 School, at a business located at the intersection of Horn Lake Road and Shelby Drive. Despite initial reports being unclear on whether anyone was hurt, further details confirmed that the injured man had been involved in an attempted armed robbery. The Memphis Police Department is working to piece together how the events unfolded, as reported by Action News 5.
The situation further escalated when an officer was approached by the victim, bleeding from a shot to the arm. The officer, originally investigating a minor shoplifting incident at a nearby convenience store, swiftly provided first aid. According to FOX13 Memphis, police later found the victim's Audi on Horn Lake Road, its engine running, tire blown, and the driver-side window shattered by gunfire, hinting at a chaotic scene.
Diving deeper, the police discovered nearby surveillance footage showing the victim interacting with individuals in a silver Infiniti SUV at the gas pumps in the store. Moments later, a dark Honda with potentially three occupants was seen following the Audi, before it exited the range of the camera. The police also uncovered a handgun with a full magazine, dropped near the car. The gun was later identified as stolen from Forrest City, Ark., suggesting an even more complex criminal backdrop to this event.
