It's shovels in the ground for Logan Square as Mayor Brandon Johnson joins forces with city officials to kickstart the Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project. The work, set to revamp a stretch of Milwaukee Avenue between Belmont Avenue to Logan Square, will be a whopping $27 million endeavor aiming to boost public spaces, ramp up pedestrian safety, and drive local economic growth.

"Today, we are celebrating a great milestone for our city and the Logan Square community," said Johnson, as per  Chicago's official website. He hailed the project as not just a simple roadway reconstruction, but a beacon of community safety, local business support, and a nod to the area's rich cultural heritage. Transformations in the works include reconfigured public spaces, protected bike paths, and a new plaza dressed in Latin American vibrancy near the Logan Square Blue Line Station.

The blueprint for the project details broader sidewalks for diners to relish al fresco experiences, raised crosswalks for those on foot, and islands of refuge to ensure safety within the veins of traffic. And for the busy bees behind the wheel, modernized traffic signals are set to create a smoother flow on the road, keeping safety at the forefront.

Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, the Alderman of the 35th Ward, showed a palpable excitement for the project's start. "I am thrilled that the Milwaukee Streetscape and Logan Square Centennial Redesign projects are commencing after many years of community advocacy and planning," he expressed, as he told Chicago's official website. Ramirez-Rosa is counting on it to furnish the residents with ample public space, and safe transportation avenues, a relief awaited for long. And as CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney put it, the venture is the fruit of intense collaboration aiming for a spruced-up, safer Milwaukee Avenue, for the Logan Square and Avondale communities.
