South Beach's historic Flamingo Park is set for a facelift, as Miami Beach officials prepare to roll up their sleeves and dig into the renovation of a 74-year-old park lodge, The ground will break tomorrow at 5:30 p.m., ushering in a new era for the dilapidated building once home to the park's groundskeeper, to now serve the community with programs and perhaps even snacks.
The fixer-upper, sitting in the heart of Flamingo Park at 11 Street and Jefferson Avenue, has been on the city's radar after years of neglect left it vacant and in need of serious TLC. According to a statement obtained by the City of Miami Beach, Interim City Manager Rickelle Williams said, "This building originally served as a residence for the park’s groundskeeper, but in recent years it had fallen into disrepair and sat vacant." Williams added, "We plan to restore the structure for an adaptive reuse."
Pouring $1 million into the project, sourced from the city's 2018 General Obligation Bond, renovations will include a top-to-bottom overhaul with a spiffy new interior layout, upgraded finishes inside and out, and a slew of repairs and enhancements. These upgrades aren't just skin deep – they'll be adding new doors, windows, roofing, plus lighting and landscaping that's easy on the eyes and the planet. Fitting the bill for accessibility, the project also ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
And it's not just the lodge that's getting a makeover; the power needs of the park are also getting a boost with Florida Power & Light at the helm. Crews, rerouting underground electrical conduit, will work to power up the park and its neighborhood without throwing a wrench in the park's day-to-day fun. According to the City of Miami Beach, future plans within its master plan, include the master plan's future plans, swinging for the fences with updated ballfields and fluttering hearts with a butterfly garden and central art piece – all part of the bigger $15 million pot from the G.O. Bond.
With an eye on the finish line just post New Year's 2025, the Flamingo Park lodge aims to be a shiny beacon for the South Beach community – weather and other unforeseen gremlins permitting. Stay tuned as the city promises to keep us posted on this and other spruce-ups around the park.
