Nashville Court Reviews Footage in Fatal Assault Case Outside Tin Roof Bar as Family Seeks TruthSource: Google Street View

Clashing narratives and a demand for more evidence marked the courtroom as the family of Austin Turner and the defense of Richard Cornelius, a security guard accused of fatally assaulting Turner outside a Demonbreun Street bar, reviewed key surveillance footage. In February, an incident between Turner and Cornelius escalated, leaving Turner comatose and leading to his death weeks later, Ground News reported.

The video, exhibited in court on Wednesday, shows the moments Turner was allegedly struck multiple times by Cornelius as he walked away from Tin Roof bar. Turner's family was confronted with the harrowing images, their first glimpse at the footage capturing their loved one's final conscious moments. According to WKRN, Austin’s stepmother, Meagan Turner expressed the tragedy of the situation, stating, "It’s just very unfair, the fact that he had no idea it was coming. He wasn’t prepared and just seeing that was his last moments and knowing at that moment we were never going to talk to him again."

However, Cornelius’ defense suggested an incomplete narrative, emphasizing the absence of footage from inside the establishment before the assault. According to WSMV, defense attorney Ben Powers stated, "We feel like it was a good day for us because we feel like there is more to the story that has now been presented." Witnesses testified that Turner had been removed from the bar for trespassing and was hostile upon his return, potentially leading to the violent confrontation.

The prosecution leaned on the video evidence, arguing it indicated no immediate threat that could justify the use of force by Cornelius. "Mr. Turner is leaving," Assistant District Attorney Megan King said, as reported by WSMV. "Mr. Turner’s back is to the defendant when the defendant pursues him further. When he begins swinging and hitting him, resulting in punching him, which ultimately results in his death." The case now moves to the Grand Jury to decide whether it will proceed to trial.
