A series of motorcycle-related collisions on Nashville's I-24 has left one rider dead and another critically injured over the weekend. The Metro Nashville Police Department reports that the critically injured motorcyclist, a 23-year-old man, crashed on Sunday evening near I-24 West when attempting to access the I-440 West ramp. He subsequently struck the guardrail after veering off the right shoulder, was thrown from his bike, and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment, as WSMV detailed in a Sunday article.
A separate incident on Saturday night claimed the life of a 22-year-old Texas man riding along I-24 East. The young man, identified as Matthew Arevalo, was reportedly sideswiped by an unidentified white vehicle while trying to pass between two cars and subsequently collided with a Mini Cooper. Arevalo was pronounced dead at the scene, despite wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Following the collision, the motorcycle burst into flames upon hitting the retaining wall, Fox17 reported the tragic accident.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) stated that the Sunday crash led to temporary lane and exit ramp closures along I-24 West, though they were reopened by later in the evening. Officers from the South Precinct and TDOT crews worked on the scene to redirect traffic and investigate the causes of the crash. The motorcyclist's speed did not appear to be a factor, according to witness statements cited by WKRN.
