
Tragedy struck Chicago's West Side once again as gunfire erupted in the Austin neighborhood, leaving one man dead and another wounded. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the shooting occurred on the 5100 block of West Maypole Avenue at around 5:40 p.m. on Thursday.
The victims, 58-year-old Tommy Marshall, and an unidentified 40-year-old man, found themselves targeted by an assailant who came up firing, the bullets found flesh and blood before the echoes of their passing could fade, Marshall succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds upon arrival at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The second man was listed in fair condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the back, and detectives are investigating the incident, as of now, no arrests have been made.
Fox32 Chicago reports the suspect unleashed a volley of gunfire after approaching the two men, and despite the swift response of emergency services, Marshall's injuries proved fatal. The surviving victim’s current state in the hospital has been declared fair.
The Chicago Police Department has yet to reveal a suspect in the wake of the deadly altercation, and the search is ongoing, investigators are threading through the tangled skein of West Side's violent tapestry, in hopes of capturing whoever is responsible for the attack that left one man dead and the community reeling another man hospitalized; the proximity of both incidents reflecting a chiaroscuro of the life and death that brushes against these streets. Anyone with information is urged to come forward as the city grapples with this latest bout of violence.
