A 5-year-old boy witnessed the horrific stabbing that left his older brother dead and his pregnant mother critically wounded in a brutal attack in their Chicago home, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The suspect, Crosetti Brand, 37, is charged with the murder of 11-year-old Jayden Perkins and the attempted murder of their mother.
Brand, who had just been paroled a day before the attack, represented himself in court on Monday. The attack took place in the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue and left the community reeling. Tragically, the young victim tried to protect his mother before succumbing to his wounds, as detailed by an ABC7 Chicago report. Family members erupted in anger during Brand's court appearance, resulting in a physical altercation with deputies.
Brand's criminal history includes a prior home invasion and violations of protective orders, including one involving Jayden's mother. The young witness described the attacker—his mother's ex-boyfriend—as "savaging" his mother and brother, a term he explained meant "when someone is getting stabbed,” as stated in his interview with a child advocate. The child's interview could play a crucial role in the trial, despite Brand challenging its admissibility in court.
Following the tragedy, the community has rallied to support the Perkins family, with over $50,000 raised for their support, as mentioned by 48th Ward Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth as per the ABC7 Chicago article. Brand, meanwhile, continues to insist on representing himself, citing concerns about the public defender's office leaking his trial strategy, and has declined assistance from the court-appointed Cook County Public Defender's Office unless a private attorney is provided.
The aftermath of the attack has led to a shakeup at the state Prison Review Board, with resignations coming in the wake of the tragic events. Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation to prevent such incidents, stating, "However rare, this is horrific and we need to do an evaluation, particularly in this case and others, to ensure that there were no gaps in the justice system," as per the ABC7 Chicago coverage. Jayden's mother remains in the hospital in critical condition, while her unborn child is expected to survive the attack.
