A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 24 in Clarksville, prompting the closure of the eastbound lanes near the Tennessee Welcome Center, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, Clarksville Police confirmed the incident occurred near mile marker 0.2. According to FOX 17, the Tennessee Highway Patrol is en route to take over the ongoing investigation. In the meantime, traffic is being diverted as the stretch of interstate remains inaccessible.

Clarksville Police Department spokesman Scott Beaubien detailed that the pedestrian was on I-24 when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle. Clarksville Now quoted Beaubien saying the incident took place at about 9:42 p.m. Motorists in the area are being advised to seek alternative routes until the thoroughfare can be cleared.
