The call is out for brave souls in Plymouth to step up as the community's newest part-time/on-call firefighters, the Plymouth Fire Department announced yesterday. Seeking individuals from diverse backgrounds, anyone from teachers to veterans is encouraged to apply for these positions, according to a bulletin posted by the city. Complete with flexible hours aimed at accommodating parents and full-time workers, the department promises to be an adaptable employer.
For those interested, recruitment meetings are a must-attend, with two major sessions planned for 6:30 pm at Plymouth Fire Station 2 on 12000 Old Rockford Road, scheduled on June 13 and June 20, during which potential recruits can gather insights about the firefighting life, talk directly to currently-serving firefighters and get any questions answered – partners are also welcomed to join, in an informational post on the city's website. Fire Battalion Chief Steve Baker emphasized the approachability of the profession, stating, “Becoming a firefighter may sound daunting, but people are often surprised to find that it isn’t,” true to the claim that educational and practical training are all part of the department's support for its crew.
The job stretches beyond the usual fire and medical emergency responses; firefighters are deeply engaged with public education in schools, homes, businesses, and community organizations. As touted by the fire department, this role is not just about serving others but also about gaining valuable skills, forging strong friendships, and enjoying a fulfilling work experience. Candidates must hurdle some basic requirements, including a minimum age of 18, a high school diploma or its equivalent, residence within an eight-minute drive to a Plymouth fire station, and a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
The benefits for these part-time/on-call firefighting positions can’t be overlooked, these firefighters receive an hourly wage for all on-duty activities, have access to fitness facilities, are eligible for partial vesting in a pension after five years, and can choose to defer wages to a retirement plan – a bit of financial foresight promoted by the department. "While the time commitment is higher the first year, this position provides a lot of flexibility for life outside of the fire station," Baker said, providing insights into the balance of work and personal life within the role. Applications are open until June 30 and for more details, or to apply, residents can swing by plymouthmn.gov/firefighter, or contact the firefighter recruitment line at 763-509-5129 or via email at [email protected] for a more personal touch.
