A suspect wounded in a shooting incident in Portland’s Russell Neighborhood has been identified, authorities reported. The man, Patrick W. Myers, 44, of Portland, is currently under police guard while receiving medical treatment for his injuries at a local hospital. Once medical clearance is granted, Myers, a sex crimes suspect, is expected to be booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center, as detailed in a press release from the Portland Police Bureau.
According to official statements, the operation began early Wednesday with a multi-agency effort to serve a search warrant related to internet crimes against children. At 4:06 a.m., the Police Bureau's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, supported by the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), ventured to execute the warrant.
The CNT engaged Myers for over an hour, starting at 4:19 a.m., in an attempt to coax his peaceful surrender. Communication between Myers and negotiators was severed by Myers himself abruptly at 6:06 a.m. In just two minutes after ceasing talks, Myers confronted law enforcement personnel with a rifle as he exited his residence, triggering a SERT officer to discharge their weapon, injuring the suspect.
Subsequent to the gunfire, at 6:14 a.m., SERT members took Myers into custody. A medic embedded with the team began to administer aid a minute later, and by 6:25 a.m., Myers was en route to the hospital. In the wake of the shooting, PPB's Homicide Unit, along with the Forensic Evidence Division and additional units, responded and are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident, police said.
