A devastating blaze erupted on the West Side of San Antonio, sending a man to University Hospital with burns as he valiantly saved his family and pets from their inferno-engulfed home. The fire, which reportedly started around 9:30 p.m. yesterday at a residence on White Deer Lane near Loop 1604, led to the total loss of the house. According to FOX San Antonio, the homeowner was hospitalized for burns.
Firefighters were called to the scene and arrived to find heavy flames aggressively emerging from inside the home. The family, which included two children and several dogs, all managed to safely evacuate the premises. While the family narrowly escaped physical harm, the father was not as fortunate, obtaining injuries while ensuring the safety of his loved ones. He is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. The adjacent property also sustained damage due to the heat which was so intense it caused part of a neighboring home to melt.
The San Antonio Fire Department was faced with a hazardous environment upon entry, as debris obstructed their path. "Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from inside the home and by the time they got inside, there was debris everywhere," as KENS 5 reported. Fire crews indicated that this made shutting off the home's utilities particularly challenging.
The American Red Cross has been engaged to assist the now displaced family. While the investigation into the fire's origin is ongoing.
